A reliable water supply is essential in any emergency. Fire hydrant systems ensure firefighters can access water quickly and safely, but like all fire protection systems, they must be tested regularly to confirm they’ll perform when needed.
At FWSR Group, we conduct Annual Hydrant Flow Tests in accordance with AS 1851-2012: Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment. Our testing confirms that your hydrant system maintains the required water pressure and flow, supporting effective emergency operations and full compliance with Australian Standards.

What is a Hydrant Flow Test?

A hydrant flow test - also called a water supply proving test - measures how well your fire hydrant system performs under realistic firefighting conditions.

During the test, we confirm that the water supply delivers the correct pressure and flow, that pipework is free from obstructions, and that all valves, couplings and outlets operate as designed.

These tests are completed annually alongside routine inspections to ensure every hydrant in your system is ready for use.

Why annual testing is important

Regular hydrant testing provides confidence that your system will perform when it’s needed most. It:

  • Protects safety by confirming that the system can deliver the water flow firefighters require during an emergency.

  • Ensures compliance with AS 1851-2012 and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

  • Improves reliability by detecting corrosion, blockages or deterioration before they lead to costly repairs.

  • Supports insurance requirements through up-to-date compliance documentation and records

What we record during the test

Each Annual Hydrant Flow Test Report provides a detailed record of your system’s performance, including:
  • Site details and test date
  • Locations of hydrants tested
  • Minimum water flow (L/s) and pressure (kPa)
  • Static and residual pressure readings
  • Comparison against design requirements
  • Notes on any obstructions, defects or corrective actions required
All results are stored in our Uptick customer portal (LINK), where you can easily view, download or share reports for audits and insurance.

What else we check
Our technicians complete a full service during your annual visit, inspecting hydrant valves (above and below ground), non-return, stop and relief valves, and ensuring all signage, access and strainers are compliant. We also review the design and documentation of your hydrant system to ensure ongoing suitability and compliance.
All results are uploaded to our Uptick customer portal, where you can easily view and download reports for your records.
