5-Yearly Hydrant
Service & Testing

Keeping your fire systems ready for the real test

Fire hydrant systems are critical to protecting lives and property during an emergency.

Over time, components such as valves, gaskets and pipework can corrode or seize, reducing performance when it’s needed most.
That’s why, under AS 1851-2012: Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment, a comprehensive five-yearly hydrant service and test is required.
At FWSR Group, our certified technicians carry out this essential testing to ensure your hydrant system remains compliant, reliable and ready for emergency use.

What’s Involved in a
5-Yearly Hydrant Service

The five-yearly service goes beyond standard inspections. It’s a detailed, hands-on process that simulates firefighting conditions and verifies that the hydrant system, booster assembly and pipework perform under pressure.

During this service, we test and service all valves - including booster assemblies and non-return valves - and renew valve seats, gaskets and washers throughout the system. We also verify pressure gauges, perform calibration checks, and carry out hydrostatic pressure and flow testing to ensure the system can safely deliver the water supply required during an emergency.

This process gives confidence that your hydrant system will operate effectively and safely when firefighters need it most.

Why 5 Year Testing Matters

Regular five-year testing is more than a compliance box-tick - it’s vital for ensuring:
  • Safety assurance, confirming the system can handle firefighting pressure and flow.
  • Legal compliance with Australian Standards and workplace safety laws.
  • Early detection of corrosion, leaks or blockages before they cause failure.
  • Long-term reliability of valves, boosters and other key components.

Commissioning, Baseline Data & Condition Reports

If baseline data (such as flow and pressure readings or system design parameters) isn’t available, it must be established during commissioning or when new maintenance arrangements begin. This data provides the benchmark for future inspections, helping to identify performance issues early and supporting your annual compliance statements for insurance and occupancy requirements.
