Confined Space Entry & CPR Refresher

Course Overview

Our confined space and CPR training course covers the skills and knowledge required for safe entry to confined spaces under a work permit and for maintaining safety while working in the confined space. It also provides the learner with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are required to respond to an unconscious, nonbreathing person.

Participants are guided through recognition of typical hazardous conditions relating to confined spaces including; oxygen depletion, combustible atmospheres and atmospheric contaminants. Armed with the knowledge to identify potential hazards, participants learn how to assess a task, control the hazards and develop and implement safe work practices.

Learners also cover duties of confined space operators, standby personnel and rescue crews are presented in a combination of classroom and practical activities; leading to an assessment and entry of a confined space under controlled conditions, which is followed by a simulated rescue. Participants are encouraged throughout the program to develop, participate and apply skills in the safe management of confined spaces; from identification and planning through to execution and completion of confined space activities.

The CPR theory component is delivered at the beginning of the course prior to CSE and then is practically assessed with the rescue component of CSE.

Prospective participants in this combined refresher course are people who already hold these competencies and are looking to have their skills and knowledge recertified due to:

  • Having gained their units for CPR more than one year prior and their CSE units more than 2 years prior
  • Had their skills, knowledge and currency assessed more than 1 year for CPR and 2 years ago for CSE
  • Have not worked in or around a confined space or performed CPR for an extended period of time

Refresher Training

Industry recommends that refresher training for confined space entry should be completed every 2 years. In line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) must be refreshed annually.

All participants in this course must have previously completed a CPR and a Confined Space Entry training course and be able to provide evidence they have these (or equivalent) units of competency. Due to this the assessment is conducted first as a gap analysis tool, from this the training is then tailored to each group of learners.
